Research & Preperations
The success of an individual delegate at a Model United Nations conference does not only depend on his or her performance at the conference itself but also on research and preparation before the conference. These are two vital factors for individual success as well as the quality of debate, as this is subject to the level of expertise and knowledge delegates are able to present. Especially when it comes to complicated topics it is pivotal that delegates have profound comprehension of their respective country positions as well as detailled information on the topic. A simulation of the United Nations will become much more realistic if participants are confident in their country positions and are able to exchange their ideas and knowledge in debate. Hence, high levels of preparation are beneficial for all delegates as this will ensure an intensive learning experience as well as efficient debate.
It is recommended that delegates concentrate on three main aspects in their preparation, which are the country position, the topics and the committee, the first two being the most important.
The Three Steps of Preparation:
1. Your Country
Before you start researching your country’s position on the topics, you must find out all there is to know about the country you will represent. This ranges from the history over the political and economic system to the goegraphic and social situation. After this, you should gain firm knowledge about the country’s general policies for foreign affairs, its position in the international system, its major allies and of course its opinion on the topics discussed at EurasiaMUN.
2. The Content of Debate
The starting point of research on the topics should always be the study guides which are available on the committee site on EurasiaMUN’s website. These will give you a main idea of the topics and the aspects the chair would like to you to lay a focus on in your research. The study guides henceforth present the basis for ongoing research. However, only reading the study guide will not suffice, you must broaden and deepen your knowledge by consulting other sources, too.
3. The Committee
Finally, you should find out what the exact function your committee is and which position it has in the United Nations System. Furthermore, it is very important to gain knowledge of the competences your committee has and how its decisions and resolutions affect international actors.
