Pre-conference Trip

Hello everyone, we are Susi and Sebastian and we study European Studies and International Cultural and Business Studies at the University of Passau. Since our first semester we have been passionate members of the MUN Society. As both of us are true “Münchener Kindl”, i.e. were born and grew up in Munich, we will have the pleasure to take you around our hometown and show you all must-see places – including those that you don’t find in tourist guidebooks!
Monday, 10 May 2010
We’ll start with a sightseeing tour through the old town, before we take you to the English Garden. In this largest intra-urban park of the world the wave riding surfers are probably the least crazy people. During a break in one of the most famous beer gardens you can enjoy the typical laid-back side of Munich and listen to original Bavarian brass music. In the afternoon we will show you why Munich has been described as “Ancient Athens in Bavaria”, how the dark years of Third Reich changed the city, and how some courageous students fought against the terror of the Nazis. Before we head for a joyful Bavarian evening at the world-famous Hofbräuhaus, you’ll climb Old Peter to have a splendid view from above.
Tuesday, 11 May 2010
In the morning we will tour the Residence, former centre of the once powerful and glorious Wittelsbacher dynasty. It was at this magnificent palace where the Bavarian kings held court until the early 20th century. After lunch at the local’s most favourite beer hall, the Augustiner, we will ascend the Olympic Tower to enjoy the stunning view over the whole southern Bavarian Alpine upland, and explore the Olympic Stadium, internationally acclaimed for its magnificent architecture. After spending the afternoon doing whatever you like, we will meet for a pub-crawl through Munich’s best nightlife district, the Glockenbachviertel.
Wednesday, 12 May 2010
During our official appointment at the Bavarian State Chancellery, you will get the chance to learn and debate about international relations from a sub-regional perspective: The German “Länder” (provinces) are not allowed to pursue an own foreign policy, but the federal government can hardly be successful at the international level against their interests. How this shapes Germany’s relations with Asia and Europe will be discussed. Before we take the train to Passau around noon, we will conclude the Pre-Conference Trip with a coffee break at one of Munich’s most beautiful spots: the Odeon’s square!
