What is MUN?

You have never been to a Model United Nations conference before? You are interested in international relations, fascinated by different cultures, and want to meet people from around the world? Then it is definitely for you time to go!

Model United Nations (commonly abbreviated as MUN) is, as its name suggests, an authentic simulation of the practices, actions, and debates of the real United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations. The sessions are moderated by a director and are organized under the Rules of (parliamentary) Procedure. The conferences are initiated by students, brought forth by students, and participated by students, thus giving Model United Nations its unique nature.

What do you do at MUN?

At Model United Nations you take on the role of a foreign diplomat and debate, advocate and ultimately collaborate with other delegates over a certain topic of international politics in an effort to arrive at a solution that can actually be implemented. Thereby, you face the thrilling challenge of setting aside your own personal views on a specific topic, as you have to accurately represent the official policy of the country you represent. This can be quite difficult when you are dealing with controversial topics like Human Rights or when the discussion becomes very heated.

Representing and defending your country’s interest is a vital part of the simulation, however, in the spirit of the United Nations, you should also serve the notion of international cooperation in order to protect and promote such interests as global peace, security, and prosperity. Thus, you may be faced with the difficult dilemma of securing your country’s interest, or being part of an international cooperation. You rank the protection of your national interest higher? Well, go for it! But be prepared: Other countries will not applaud you!

How do you benefit from MUN?

Model UN is a unique experience that allows and encourages you to hone your debating and negotiating skills, but also requires thorough research of the issue to be discussed and its political, societal, and legal background. Especially investigating your country position is a challenging task: What is the position of Yemen / China / Spain / … on the Unresolved Conflicts between Israel and Palestine / Energy Security / Anti Corruption / …? But don’t worry, you just have to prepare for one country and the two topics of your committee.

Do you think you have what it takes to convince the other delegates to follow your lead? Do you want to find out if you were born to be a diplomat? Are you looking to have a fun and educational experience, meet lots of new people from all over the world, and have a great time? Register now for EurasiaMUN 2010 and find out the answers to all these questions, and in short have the time of your life together with 250 other enthusiastic students.
